Interior Paint Preparation Tips to Make the Job Easier
If you want to ensure you are able to achieve a professional-quality paint job for the interior of your home, it’s important to understand that the preparation process matters. If you don’t properly prep the area to be painted, there’s no chance the finished product will seem “finished.” If you want to ensure you achieve the desired final product, use the tips listed here.
Protect Your Furniture
Unless you are going to be painting an empty room, you will probably have to move furniture out of the way at some point during the prep process. If you skip this step, you may damage your furniture and find an outline of your bed or dresser when you finally decide to rearrange the space.
A similar issue will occur in a bathroom. In many cases, the wall color will just stop at the side of the toilet tank.
Be sure to move away anything on the walls. Put it in the center of the room or take them out of the space entirely. Make sure you also cover the furniture with a protective coating. You should also identify what items will be most vulnerable to damage from paint, such as fabric and upholstered items. If the paint does drip on these items, be sure you take action quickly to eliminate permanent damage.
Remove the Wall Plates
After the furniture has been moved away from the wall, you can see all the outlet and light switch covers in the room. Make sure to remove these, along with any vent or return covers.
While it is possible to paint around or over these items, the visual separation between the cover and wall plates will be blurred. This is going to create an unprofessional and ragged look to these areas.
Also, if you need to remove an outlet cover in the future, if the outlet is covered in paint, it may pull the paint off the walls. If you find that the outlet or light switch covers are loose as you remove them, then you should put a bit more effort into tightening it when you put it back up.
Cover the Floor
Layout something to protect the floor in the area where you plan to work. It is best to provide cover a minimum of three feet away from the wall where you are painting. Canvas drop cloths are the best option for this, but there are other, more affordable methods of floor protection, as well.
Hire the Professionals
If you aren’t sure you can handle the prep work for painting an interior room on your own, or if you just don’t want to, then it is best to hire the professionals. They can help ensure that the area is properly prepared and that there is no paint in areas where it should not be. Also, by hiring the pros, it is guaranteed that the finished work will exceed your needs and expectations.
